Colts get by Pens......Bulldogs get a scare against Jr. Miners
There were significant games on the slate Friday evening in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League but the first one we will start with is the clash between the Colts and East Hants in Lantz.as the Colts won their fifth consecutive game 5-2 over the Penguins improving their regular season record to 10-3-0 and costing the Penguins their second regulation loss off the season as the Pens fell to 11-2-1.  The Pens now hold a three point lead on the Colts in the race for first place in the Fred Fox Division and one point lead on the 11-2-0 South Shore Lumberjacks entering the Lumberjacks game in Bridgewater at 7:00 p.m. tonight against the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs.

In Friday’s contest, the Pens and Colts battled to a scoreless draw in the first period before the Colts took a 2-1 lead for two periods on a power=play goal from Nolan Stevens and a short-handed effort from Liam Andrews.  Jake O’Connor opened the scoring in the second for the Pens.

Jacob Sanford tied it for East Hants early in the third period before the Colts rapped home three consecutive goals from Nolan Stevens with his 2nd of the night, Matthew Walker, and Finn Merritt.  The Colts outshot the Pens 43-36 and received stellar goaltending from Carter Aguirre as he stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced.  The Colts are headed to Brookfield for a 4:00 p.m. start Saturday afternoon while the Penguins do not return to action until Monday night in Sackville at 7:30 p.m.

Port Hawkesbury   6        Brookfield Elks    5

This game was hard fought all the way with the Elks despite losing rifled 55 shots at Strait Pirate net minder Neil MacLean, beat him 5 times but lost 6-5 to the Strait.

The Strait Pirates took a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes with Colin Preyer and Angus Berry, both who also finished with 2 assists for the Strait scoring after David McElheran had put the Elks in front 1-0.   In the second period, the Pirates Craig Saulnier scored the first of his three on the night to knot the game at 2-2.  The Elks then took control and scored three consecutive goals off the sticks of Cale McClellan who ended up two on the night and Nate Grafstein on the power-play to make it 4-3 Elks entering the final period of regulation. Saulnier added his second goal of the evening to tie the game at 4-4 in the third and it was only 1:50 later when Ben MacDonald put the Strait up 5-4.  Jackson Spraggon who has been slumping offensively this season tied the game at 5-5 for Brookfield for Saulnier with his third of the game notched the winner to make the final 6-5 Strait Pirates.  The Elks played the final 1:08 of the game with an empty net but could not come up with the tin goal.

It was mentioned earlier that the Elks are missing the offensive prowess of Jackson Spraggon this season due to the injury bug, as his goal Friday night was only his 2nd this season to go along with a pair of assists for 4 points in the Elks first 13 games compared to last season when Spraggon scored 17 times and collected 22 assists for 39 points.  The Elks are now 3-10-0 while the Pirates improved to 6-7-1.

Antigonish  4     Jr. Miners   3

The Bulldogs faced a more fierce game than many expected Friday night in Antigonish as the Bulldogs sneaked by the Jr. Miners 4-3.  Alex MacDonald put the Jr. Miners up 1-0 after the opening frame before Brody MacPherson and Daniel Chaisson put the Bulldogs up 2-1 after forty minutes,  Ayden Ball tied it for the Jr.Miners in the third.  Owen Chisholm and Kevin Walker then scored a goal each to give the Jr. Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.  Garrett MacIntosh brought the Jr. Miners back to within one but it was as close as they could get.  The Jr. Miners fell to 2-12-0 while the Bulldogs are now at 7-5-1.  Antigonish outshot the Jr. Miners 35-25.

Windsor Oxen   6      Sackville Blazers   0

In the most lopsided game of the evening, the Oxen blew past the Blazers 6-0 and outshot them 52-26 including 19-6 in the first and 23-7 in the second when Windsor scored five of their six goals.  The Blazers could not muster any great opposition the entire evening. They did test Oxen goalie Kehlan Munroe on 4 or 5 occasions but Munroe stood strong every time.

After a scoreless first period, the Oxen went to work with Nick Vidito pouncing on a 2nd rebound after William Hartnell and Cam Walsh missed the first opportunities.  Matthew Shields made it 2-0 on a bang bang play in front of the Sackville net.  Cam Walsh after two great saves by Braeden Sheikh put home a second rebound to make it 3-0.  Micah Tucker with a swing around the net made it 4-0 unaissisted.  Aiden MacLeod was all alone to the right of Sheikh when he buried the puck to the far right side to make it 5-0.

The final goal of the game came from DeShawn Fletcher in the third.

The Oxen are now 5-6-2 after 13 games while the Blazers slipped to 4-10.-0.
